What's about books??? Do you read English books???
Do you watch films without translation???

Sometimes I read books in original, just because of my profession. Unfortunately I don't have an opportunity to watch films in English.
AnnetteWise
I prefer watching news and listening to the radio. When I started studying english I adored reading books and watching movies without translation. But now I prefer talking english (if I have a chance). And I read english fairy-tales to my bambino.

Two days ago I’ve bought “The adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain. Reading it is great pleasure for me especially in original. smile.gif

Let me join you. I've graduated from Pedagogical University. My diploma says I am English language teacher, but in fact I am Translator\Interpreter.

Oh! We have one more teacher! smile.gif Welcom! Rain, answer me please, I've forgotten it. Who's translator and who's interpreter? One translates texts and the other translates people speaking. But who is who?
Anita
Цитата(Rain @ 25.10.2009, 20:01) *

You are absolutely right, Anita.

Translator is the person who translates in writing. The word "Interpreter" speaks for itself - Interpretation during communications.

smile.gif Thank you
Petra
BTW, you can also study English in cinema clubs.
As for me, I do usually visit Englush Cinema Club at "Master Klass"
I guess u can get info in the Internet about it

My favoutite sonnet. I LOVE it!

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

Hello, my name is Veronica. I am 26 years old and I ma English teacher too(lol). How many English teachers are here! I have a son, he is four-years-old.He is my youngest pupil but I don't work hard at his Knowledge of English. I work with him only if he reveals initiative himself.
So, I want to say that Bondgirl had a great practice in speaking English because when I talk to Americans or Eglishmen they sometimes cannot understand me and say that some of words or speach phrases are not in colloquial language!
So, I have niticed, the more I learn English the more I realize that I don't know it))) It is some kind of irony of studying.
Dear learners and teacher let's share with each other with the most difficult points of studying of English. And let's overcome all difficulties together! And one more, I suggest to share with different useful folder target of interesting sites wich connect with studying English. I will be the first:http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?a=1

Hello, everyone!

My name is Olga. I am 30. I have no kids yet. Three weeks ago I had a wedding.
So, fresh impressions of a wonderful party are still flying over me.

I would like to appeal to all of you in giving me ideas of what kind of work to choose in my life.
I graduated from the University (English Language Department) several years ago. I had 4 years of English teacher experience (some translation and interpreting experience also). It appeared that being as English teacher is not my cup of tea. And it is too difficult to be a translator.
I worked as a regular Call Centre operator, was a supervisor and now I am at home for 4 months as the whole team was dismissed and we were fired. I would not say that I liked this work either.
Thanks God, my husband has a job. And I want to help him so much in earning money.

I would appreciate if you suggest me something. All I know I am still searching myself in this life(it’s a shame to say that as I am 30! already).
But I need some interesting work. I am sick and tired of being a housewife.
I thank you very kindly for any of your idea.

I apologize for the mistakes I made as I have forgotten some English because of not using it for long time.

Hello Olga, I think you must do work which is the most interesting and difficult. You've written that to be a translator is difficult I think you should develop this area because it gives you much experience. I like the difficulties which are connected with my work. But I cannot stand monotonous work. So, I think you should try different work and then decide which is suitable for you the most)))

Anita
Hello, Olga! First let me congratulate you with your wedding! Be happy!

I agree with яркая звездочка about your job. If you want to work just act, and that's all. We often don't like our job first and then we become more and more interesting in it as soon as our professional abilities grow. And don't be ashamed that you have not found yourself yet. Everything will come to you in your time!

PS I think your English is both correct and beautiful! I didn't notice any mistakes at all smile.gif

Thank you, girls, for your congratulations and reflections.

I totally agree with you, that the more we work and find out about the sphere we are in, the more we get interested in what we do and the better we are. But translation and interpreting is rather complicated for me. It takes so much time and patience to have the work done. And telling you the truth, it got on my nerves when I was busy with that.
To spare time and health on the work we do not like is harmful from different sides, is it?
On the other hand, I understand that nowadays we do not have much to choose.

Teaching, being a tutor, translating – all of that is not for me.
I am depressed and feeling that I will not find the work I do like ever.
Anita
Olia, and what do you enjoy in your life? I don't mean job. Maybe some hobby?

dear Olya, tell me what do you like to do the most in your life. Don't connect everything with English area. Just sit and think of the work which you have ever done with pleasure! I think that the decision is in your heart. If you are in depression now because of your work I can assume it is not your variant and even don't torture yourself.

I have no hobby - fortunately or unfortunately, who knows.
It'is rather hard to tell that watching TV, playing computer games, playing billiard, listening to music and few reading can be called a hobby that may influence in some way to choose a suitable occupation.

It is good to have a desired work to be a hobby.

I was thinking of what I like doing and what I do not (in relation to a desired work).

I like: organizing, preparation of things, planning events, writing reports, reviews, working with papers, correspondence, speaking with foreigners (not too much),
Concentrative work, a monotonous one I can even say.

I do not like: translating and interpreting (only few), English teaching at all, being a tutor.

Girls, I remind my preparations of the wedding party. It was exciting, I read so many columns, looked through many sites and prepared interesting and impressive presents for the quests. It was a new, quite new view of a wedding in general. And it gave me pleasure.

I would like to create quite a new occupation. I always wanted to work in the field that few people work. I do not know why. Maybe something connected with a wedding organization? or some business conferences/seminars organization?
But all of these things are just DREAMS. Only a person who has some financial basis can start a business. Only support from other people (parents, relatives, etc) can help in setting up this.
As I told you before – it is just a dream...

How do you think?

At my previous work I used demotic abbreviations. Then I found other one, and there I am forbidden to use demotic abbreviations. So, it depends on people with whom you talk and situation in what you are.
At the third year of studying we passed different kinds of abbreviations briefly. But I needed my knowledge of this abbreviations when I nearly forgot it and I had to study it all over again.
And do you use it often?

Yes. It was hard decision for me... I was thinking what to do for 3 month. I miss my family and friends, but I understand that I don't have anything at home. And it's hard to believe, but it's easier to start from the very begining here... So I found one great opportunity to stay. I am going to be a student, nothing serious, just language school, it's cheaper than college. But maybe in future I'll transfer to college.
Now I am looking for a job, appartament and saving money (the most tough part)

Hello everybody here!

My name is Olga, and I've just registered in the forum and encountered this English Club here.
I am 33, married and have a 4-year old son.
I am a teacher of English and German by profession, but I worked as a teacher of English in one of Kiev schools for 2 years only, then I found another job. At first I worked at an editorial office as a translator, then I found a position of executive assistant at one of the Ukrainian-German JVs. Since then my life has been mostly tightly connected with the German language, but I am still using my knowledge of English at times and do not want to forget what I have learned at the University. So I read news and interesting information in Internet at English or American websites.
I want my son to learn English too, that's why he attends additional lessons at his kindergarten "English for toddlers" twice a week. But I do understand, that it is not enough, I am also trying to speak English with him, but honestly, he has not shown any great interest in this matter yet. Although, he speaks perfect Ukrainian, as for his age, and his father uses German in communicaton with some of his colleagues. smile.gif

And what about you - how are you trying to learn your children English, living here, in Ukraine?
яркая звёздочка
Olga, I have the same situation with my son. But i don't want to force him to learn English now. I refer to his age and his nowadays interests. If he wants we can read books and count in English, if he doesn't want I leave him. I don't want to arose rejection of language. May be I ma not right but it is comfortable fo me(and I think for him too). I think if he is ready I will do my best for him.
Fire Dragon
Thank you for the answer.

As I have already understood, nowadays we, grown-ups, are often too much concerned about preparing our toddlers for school, and we try stuffing them with all kinds of knowledge, which can be useful at primary school. Of course, we are forced to do it because of the call of the times..
...But I think it is not correct in some aspects, because a person can live through a preschool age only once in his/her life, and parents often see this period as just 2-3 years which should be maximally used for cramming children's heads with letters, numbers, elements of maths, memorizing of foreign words etc., instead of just letting them live this period of their children's lives through playing, learning to communicate and getting practical experience, not to mention their physical development...
Everyone knows communication in English is the best way of learning it, but if I start talking English to my sonny, he looks a little worried and asks me to speak Ukrainian smile.gif . So I agree with you that it may be still too early for him. OK, everything is good in its season, e.g. I started to learn English at school at the age of 10.

Well, I totally agree with you and I am sure that if we begin to teach our kids at the age of 10 it would not be bad. The main rule of learning language is system. Anyway, if you even don’t know language but you want that your child know it you do your best and everything will be all right.

We have English lessons in our kindergarten too. But I prefered dance hobby group. To my mind it is really early and frankly speaking useless to stuff my 4 years old daughter's head with English. For kids of this age physical development is also very important. From the other side I can teach her English myself at home. But it is more like a game than a lesson. So that it is not boring and brings her fun) Sonya can count, knows some little verses. She knows "fairy" words like "thank you", "hello", "please", "good night" and so on. I like faces of people who after treating her a candy hear "Thank you!" They are shocked)) laugh.gif
